Airtightness testing

Air tightness testing quantifies infiltration, which is the uncontrolled movement of air through cracks and holes in the buildings. It is a requirement of Part L1A and L1B that most new buildings are airtightness tested and this involves maintaining a set pressure between inside and outside the building, measuring the volume of air and then relating it to the surface area of the building.

The test can also be used to diagnose air tightness issues in existing buildings prior to refurbishment, where it can identify priorities for improvement.

At Green Footsteps, we use thermal imaging in combination with air tightness testing when weather conditions permit. When it is not possible to use thermography, a smoke test may be used.
